Design and Technology at Cumberland
Our Intent
We value, encourage and promote through our DT curriculum opportunities for children to use their imagination, perseverance and collaboration skills, which are three of our six Learning Values.
From making a wagon fit for a circus act, to producing a Jacket Potato filling good enough for the Evil Potato Robber to release Mr Potato Head from his clutches, during their time at Cumberland our children have numerous opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills linked to the Design and Technology National Curriculum.
In Year R the most popular activities that the children access in ‘Discovery Time’ are construction equipment and the ‘Making Area’. Through discussions with parents, we learn about the children’s interest before they begin Year R. We wish to develop future engineers through our maths, science and DT Curriculum. The ‘On the Move’ topic in Year R, cultivates their interest in vehicles and moving parts, preparing them for Year 1 where they make their own fixed and free moving axles. We aim to build on children’s interests, knowledge and skills throughout their time with us, preparing them for the KS1 curriculum and beyond.
Learning to make a plan, evaluate and improve it, enables the children to apply our Learning Values of imagination, perseverance, collaborating and perseverance. They also have opportunities to apply their mathematical and English skills, as they use their knowledge of shape, measurement, reading and writing skills to ensure that their design is correct and the product fit for purpose.
We ensure opportunities are provided for children to discover the real impact of design and technology on the wider environment and help to inspire children to become the next generation of innovators.
