Phonics at Cumberland
Hear It, Say It, Read It, Write It
Phonics is a priority in the teaching of reading at Cumberland. Children cannot become highly engaged in reading if reading words is a struggle. The application of phonics is taught as the primary strategy in the teaching of reading. We have developed our own in house Phonics Programme ‘Hear it, Say it, Read it, Write it’ which broadly follows ‘Letters and Sounds’ from Little Cumberland Pre-School through to Year 2 with specially developed resources that also include the 2014 National Curriculum programmes of study for Year 1 and Year 2. This programme allows our children to become competent and confident ‘word readers’. Phase 2 is song based and sound rhymes are used to teach phase 3 onwards.
Aims
Using the ‘Hear it, Say it, Read it, Write it’ programme, we aim for our children to be able to:
- Recognise, say and write all phonemes within each phase of Letters and Sounds as well as phonemes from 2014 National Curriculum programme of study.
- Use their phonic knowledge to blend and segment phonetically decodable words.
- Use their phonics knowledge to attempt to read and write more complex words.
- Read easily, fluent and with good understanding.
- Develop the habit of reading widely for both pleasure and information.
- Write clearly and accurately using their phonic knowledge.
