Geography at Cumberland
Our Intent
A crucial part of a child’s development is for them to gain a thorough understanding of the world. At Cumberland, it is our desire to connect children with the world around them; helping them to create an identity and pique their curiosity by instilling a sense of awe and wonder.
Our engaging project-led curriculum enables the children to ‘think like geographers’ and encourages them to grow with an inquisitive and creative nature. With the beach as our neighbour, our Great Waterfront City rightly plays a key role in our curriculum. From encountering local transport to exploring Portsmouth’s geographical features, we aim to enrich our children’s lives with first-hand observations of the world they live in.
Broadening our pupils’ personal experiences is very important to us. In Year Two, our learning transports pupils to the other side of the world (New Zealand) and allows them the opportunity to celebrate cultural differences as well as be a part of them. Learning the Haka is a personal favourite of ours!
By exploring places near and far, the children at Cumberland learn to understand and appreciate the wonders of the world as well as develop a set of skills that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
