Music at Cumberland
We are so incredibly lucky at Cumberland, as sometimes we are treated during our assemblies with live music! Have a look below to see our recent guests.
We were so lucky to have one of our parents lead an assembly for us - a very different type of assembly….
They brought a violin, a viola and a cello. They explained how the instruments are made and how you play them - we even had a helper from Year R during one song!
They played songs from long ago, and some other songs that we recognised and joined in with singing along.
What a wonderful way to end the day!
Our Music Festival at Cumberland Infant School!
Our Music Intent
At Cumberland Infants, musical opportunities are highly-valued and we give all children the opportunity to experience musical success.
We are a singing school where pupils are confident singers and are regularly encouraged to participate and perform in feel-good singing opportunities, such as assemblies, performances to parents, Christmas plays and city-based singing festivals.
We teach music through an appealing integrated curriculum with opportunities to develop all of our school learning values but especially those of imagination and collaboration. All of our learning is based on the National Curriculum programmes of study. We believe that all children have the capacity to become composers so we give them the opportunity to compose throughout their time at school using percussion instruments, environmental sounds and technology.
From composing music to depict a 'woodland walk' in Year One, to composing music to reflect our 'special place' in Year Two, we are on a musical journey of developing musicianship skills, such as understanding tempo and pitch, along with extending our knowledge and appreciation of music from different genres and times. Children learn to explore what sounds percussion instruments can make and find their singing voices in Reception classes, while in Year Two children explore environmental sounds to make music, in the style of the West-End musical group, 'Stomp'.
We consider music to be important for our life-long, general well-being so children at Cumberland are also given opportunities to attend music workshops within the City of Portsmouth and can join an extracurricular recorder club, if they wish to, when they get to Year Two and a lunchtime choir is offered to Year 1 and 2.
We ensure that music, in whatever form, is a fun and enjoyable learning experience within which children learn to express themselves and develop creatively in a safe but challenging way. We hope to inspire our children to continue with a love of music as they move through their subsequent stages of education.
