Phonics in Reception - ‘Hear it, Say it, Read it, Write it.’  

At Cumberland, we are very proud of the phonics scheme that we have created. Our scheme allows us to respond to the differing needs of the children, supporting all children to become confident early readers and writers.  

Our children are introduced to their first set of phonics sounds in the first half term of starting school. Within this term, they not only learn what sound each letter makes but they develop the skills of blending for reading and segmenting for spelling.  

In the Autumn term, we run an information evening for parents to support them with helping their child to become a confident early reader.
